Cathy- Yeah sorry about that. The Anniversary Sale is always packed, my bad, I should have thought to mention it. There should have been a cashier at every register though so the wait probably wasn't as long as it could have been. Again I'm really sorry I forgot to mention it. I hope you got some REALLY great deals though. the online store has all of the same things though, but you still have to wait a week and a half to two weeks to get your stuff. So it just depends on what kind of wait you want to do. OMG though. Keen H2 sandles they're normally $90 sandles they're on sale for $65! Kayaks and Bikes are 15% off, etc, great deals on clothes too. Sorry, I'm such a junkie and it really doesn't help that I work there. Lol.

I'm going to be in Tahoe for Valhalla too :-) And REI has all of these things that you mentioned and if you're member you get 10% back on your dividend check. It also makes it nice because if you get it at REI they pretty much guarantee their products so if anything breaks or malfunctions or just doesn't meet your needs you can return it at any time for any reason. IT's very cool. If your not a member just make sure you bring your receipts if your going to return or exchange. I'm such an REI junkie and it doesn't help that I work for them either. ALSO! The Aniversary Sale starts on MAY 2!!!! You can get some really kicka@# deals!! :-) See you all in Tahoe :-)

Winter backpacking tips I learned:

Dress correctly. Probably goes without saying here but a little cotton goes a long way... to keeping you really cold all night.
I've layered a lower-rated fleece or warm season bag with my 15 degree bag to increase the warmth. Your plan to use extra blankets will probably help.
Don't forget your Thermarest (or equivalent). That insulating layer between you and the ground is really helpful.
Wear a beanie to bed, but not much else. It'll hurt for the first few minutes but a little shivering will raise the temp inside your bag and you should warm up pretty quickly.
Put the next day's clothes in the bag with you. There's nothing worse than putting on cold pants the next morning!
Go to bed with an empty bladder. It doesn't just save that late-night trip outside the tent - the theory is that the less fluid your body has to keep warm the warmer you'll be.
Keep the tent windows cracked. In +/- 30 degree weather your big issue will be moisture. While it seems counterintuitive to leave a window open in low temps, you'll stay drier if you allow the moisture to escape.

For the amount of $$ you'd spend on hotels for two weekends, you could easily *buy* a 0 (or lower) degree bag, and then you'd have it for future use.
The tent heater is probably not much cheaper than a really good 4-season sleeping bag, either.
I've truck camped in temps down to 30 or so, and have found that thick blankets (we use those crazy high-Andes alpaca-wool blankets instead of quilts) are great, but not always sufficient.

I'm not doing serious Camping. I'm doing Renfaire camping in South Lake Tahoe at Camp Richardson the first two weekends of June. Comfort is the goal here. The night get down into the 30s and have been known to go into the 20s. I have considered these options.

1. Take a sleeping bag and a helluva lot of quilts. (I'm taking my truck. Space is not a problem.)

2. Try and rent a 0 degree bag.

3. Invest in a Zodi Tent heater. http://www.zodi.com/hotvents.html (I might use this again for a few weekends in September/October)

4. Blow the money on a decent hotel room.

What do you think?

And (assuming that you could even catch them to begin with) exactly what level of force would you apply to dissuade a potential illegal immigrant that has risked their life in an attempt to illegally enter this country? If they have already risked their life, they aren't going to be afraid to do so again. My guess is that you won't be able to "send them back home where they belong".

Think we'll light pack it. Since we don;t have to carry water we'll be light fer sure. Water is a big thing in the desert. Makes fifty lbs eighty lbs real quick. Snow makes good coffee.

I also G E N T L Y jeep around the desert: exploring, taking photos, camping a lot. I too always keep trashbags in my jeep and haul out as much trash as I can, sometimes even tying it across my hood and top. On trail, no "wildcatting", no burnouts, treading lightly ...that's how I roll :)

"the trash left by the motorcyclists and 4 wheelers (fucking shitheels)"

Well, my California camping group usually gets help from the local 4x4 clubs to clean up trash on the back roads & on National Forest lands. As an off-roader myself, I always carry trash bags & remove litter when I see it. Just to enlighten you, not all motorcyclist & 4 wheelers are litterbugs. Every summer solstice - when the Chumash indians are doing their drum circle atop Mount Pinos in Los Padres National Forest, we white people are down in Quatal Canyon cleaning up mother earth. Quatal is off Hwy 33, N of Ojai California about an hour; it's a gorgeous red dirt wash w/ pinyon pines & lupine blooming. Join us for the campout & cleanup this year!

Camp in Tuva

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Please check our photos made by Russell Roesner - our student.

“Again with that stuff. Look you can believe whatever you want. I don't care to change your mind. You can either try to understand what I'm trying to say (which it seems you're doing a poor job of) or you can ignore what I have to say, but I'm going to totally ignore your arrogant jabs (insults) and not respond to them.”

I believe I understand what you are trying to say, and that your opinion is inconsistent with the facts. I am not ignoring what you have to say, I believe that I have addressed all of the significant points you have brought to bear on this issue (and possibly some of the insignificant points as well). You started the insults with the implication that I am a Christian proselytizer that was fresh off the turnip truck. If you don’t want to be insulted, don’t insult people.

I’m STILL more interested in seeing you substantiate your statements than I am in having you apologize for your misbehavior. The insults are not the significant issue here – the issue is where do rights originate? You haven’t yet shown where in the Constitution they originate.

The reason we are discussing this is because there is some question of whether or not illegal immigrants have rights. It’s my understanding that the possible rights of illegal immigrants that were being discussed here were not necessarily those rights that were enumerated in the Constitution and guaranteed to Citizens.

By the way, whether my statements are arrogant or insulting doesn’t change their veracity.

@@@@@

“Ah, yes, the reason we have a problem with illegal immigration is becuase no one wants to come here.”

This statement is a non-sequitur. Whether this statement is true or not, it doesn’t support the claim you implied that the reason illegal immigrants want to come here is to gain rights. What you posted was “No one that I know of that is not a resident of the US has a right to anything. That is why they are all trying to come here.” To prove the second sentence, you need to find the motive for every illegal immigrant; to disprove this, all we need to do is to find one illegal immigrant that wants to come to this country for any reason other than gaining rights. By the way, Non-Resident Dual Citizens (of the United States and another country) have rights here even if they never set foot in this country. I can see where you might not know anyone in that status, so I will concede that that part of your statement could be true.

#####

“Well I'm glad to hear you're not a religious zealot, no matter where you think your rights come from.... When it comes down to it, you have no rights at all that your community, or your side arm can't/wont secure for you.”

I have whatever rights I can claim and defend. Being a political animal, I will use whatever tools are available for me to defend those rights – including camouflage, physical strength, evasive ability, analytic reasoning ability, weapons, and Social Contract, as well as other things, if I see fit to do so. My community does not secure my rights, I secure my rights.

$$$$$

“John Lockes ‘natural rights’ aren't going to keep a bear from slaughtering you, or a felon from murdering you. We live in a violent world that operates by survival of the fittest.”

This is a Straw Man argument, however:

Rights wouldn’t stop those fatalities, but acting within them could. Successfully acting within my Right to Self-Defense would prevent the bear or the felon from killing me. I would like to point out that the Constitution cannot stop those things either; it takes counter-action by people that have rights.

%%%%%

“The only use we have for ‘rights’ are to allow us to live together in an organized community, cooperatively. Outside of that system/community there's no such thing as rights.”

Does a Hermit have a right to live outside of “that system/community”? I believe that a Hermit does, so long as they can defend that right.

^^^^^

“You either live, eat, and breed, or you die. That's it.”

Maybe. I’ll give you three out of those four; I’m not certain that breeding is a right.

&&&&&

“Until you stop arrogantly professing other people's arguments have failed without trying to argue semantics and try to understand their perspective, all your arguments will continue to fail.”

Well, let’s see now. If you cannot or will not validly counter my disproofs, then your premise remains disproven. That means your argument has failed, regardless of whether or not I arrogantly profess it to be that way. That means your argument has failed regardless of whether we are arguing semantics. That means that your argument has failed whether or not I understand your perspective.

*****

“You are right, the U.S. constitution (and it's authors) were not the first people/documents to consider the idea of rights or civil liberties. I did not mean to imply they were.”

If you did not mean to imply that, why did you state that the idea of rights originated with the Constitution? You didn't mean to imply it, but you meant to state it baldly? This looks suspiciously like an admission that you were wrong.
