Perimeter Fencing : Closure of Golden Gate Park by Outside Lands

Like last year, Another Planet Entertainment plans to displace San Franciscans and visitors from Golden Gate Park. For about two weeks San Franciscans and visitors are getting kicked out of huge portion of GGP by a private entity so that it can make a profit. Chunks of time and space like this are going to add up quickly. Say good bye to the artists, musicians, athletes, fauna, and so in Speedway Meadows and hello to the Walmart greeter ....

When
21 AUG -- 3 SEPT 2009 (and in 2010--2013)

Where

A friend I checked with became obsessed with a search for what I was interested in finding. He met with some success, so I thought I'd let other campers here on the Camping tribe in on what he found:

At full beam strength, the charge is advertised as lasting 8 hours. At half strength, it's advertised as lasting 15 hours.

Camping with Public Transportation

Over the past year I've camped at the Oceano Campground (San Luis Obispo County) and San Clemente State Beach. Going to and from the Bay Area on public transit.

Here are some thoughts:

Use the internet to gather as much information as possible before you go. PRINT IT OUT AND BRING IT WITH YOU. Not all buses and trains have complete (or any) schedules available.

Print or purchase some road maps of your target area.

If you will be depending on public transportation upon your arrival be sure to call the transit authority before you go to confirm the schedule. Schedules change and you don't want to get caught.

If you will be taking a taxi from the nearest transport hub, call ahead, get rates and cost estimates.

Above all be flexible.

----------------

When it comes to bus systems, the rules can vary widely even here in California. For example; on SCAT (South County Area Transit – Oceano/Pismo Beach) the bus won't move until everybody is seated and all luggage is stowed behind a seat and only some OCTA (Orange County) bus routes can handle luggage at all.

Hi all, new here and looking for good referrals for camping areas in the Pacific Northwest. Mostly western Washington, but some western Oregon too. We'll be going light and mostly tent camping, hiking, don't need a lot of ameneties either but must be dog friendly. We can go full service campgrounds or wilderness style.

Any recomendations? Thanks!

I think maybe I should emphasize that I'm looking for something that gives directional light - like those chunky, squarish flash-lanterns our dad's used to carry (the one's with either 4 D-cell batteries, or one chunky, squarish 6-volt battery inside). Only LED. So it can give 5 hours or more of light, if needed.

Recommend a good focussed-beam LED camping lantern?

I live in a fairly remote area, but am going to the big city and will do some shopping in about a week. I want to find an LED focussed-beam lantern that will be similar to the old, standard 6-volt incandescent-bulb reflector lanterns that were carried by car campers, fishermen, homeowners and others for at least a generation or two. You know, the chunky strong-beam lantern you could park on a rock or on the ground if you needed to - to give yourself and others lots of light on a trail or in an emergency situation.

In other words, NOT an ambientlight camp lantern (that spreads light all around like an old Coleman), not a tubular "flashlight", not a headlamp on a velcro-ed band, etc. I'm hoping to find one that can be bright when needed (may have multiple beam functions) and give lots of service on a single charge or single load of batteries - AND hopefully cost under $125.

If I can find an example on-line, I van print it out and take it with me to show sales people in the outdoor stores, and save time while shopping.

Can you help me? If you don't have a Web address I can look at, just describe what you bought and where you remember buying it, okay?

Have fun.

The only park I haven't camped in is Henry Coe. Portola and Memorial are both on Pescadero Creek and you can hike from one to the other through the, unimproved, Pescadero Creek park. Until 6th grade I lived in what is now part of Memorial Park. I STILL hate eminent domain.

From Fremont Peak you can see the Monterey Bay from Santa Cruz to Moss Landing and the Southern end of the Coyote Valley almost to Pacheco Pass. There is a short trail from the campground to and around the Peak. Be VERY carefull on the rocks at the top. The view from the Oak Point Campground is better than from the Valley View Campground. I don't know why they call it Valley View, you can't see much from there. Fremont Peak is the only place I've ever seen the “Green Flash” at sunset. The conditions must be just right. A very clear sky out 100 miles to sea.

BTW, Fremont Peak makes a good jumping off point for the Northern California Renaissance Faire.

Sorry for the length of the links. You may need to do an internet search on the park names. ALL of the parks allow reservations and reservations are a good idea.

To the South I would suggest, Henry Coe (http://www.coepark.org/) State Park if you like wide open spaces, Uvas Canyon County Park (http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/parks/parksarticle?contentId=c1128a77d9784010VgnVCMP230004adc4a92____ ) if you like to camp under the trees, and (a bit south) Fremont Peak (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=564 ) State Park if you want to be up on the top of the world.

In the Santa Cruz Mountains I would suggest, Big Basin Redwoods (http://www.bigbasin.org/ ) State Park (the first California state park), Portola Redwoods ( http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=539 ) State Park near La Honda, Butano (http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=536 ) State Park near Pescadero and Memorial Park (http://www.co.sanmateo.ca.us/portal/site/parks/menuitem.f13bead76123ee4482439054d17332a0/?vgnextoid=947bc8909231e110VgnVCM1000001d37230aRCRD&cpsextcurrchannel=1 ) in Loma Mar. All of these parks are in the Redwoods. Memorial and Butano have the easiest access to the coast.

The AAA folks have two great reference maps for this sort of thing, and they are available for free to AAA members.

The maps have code numbers located on the map face that corrospond to an information grid on the back of the map.

They cover national, state, county and private campgrounds.

You can find out how many and what kind of camp sites they have, what the elevation of the campground is, if they have showers, what kind of toilets they have (pit vs. flush, etc), whether there is swimming, fishing, horseback riding, etc. nearby, whether there is shopping nearby, whether they allow pets, if they have a boatramp, and a bunch of other things as well.

The one for "Southern California" has a northernmost border that runs from roughly San Francisco to Yosemite. You will need to look at that one for San Jose, Santa Cruz and Monterey, etc.

Personally, we like driving down to Big Sur, where there are a selection of private and public campgrounds and possibly the best day hikes in California - scenic coastline, beaches, hills. Henry Cowell in Felton is locally accessible with day trips to Santa Cruz beaches. Lots of Campgrounds in the hills and beaches of San Mateo County, including Memorial Park, which is a first come, first serve county park.

I used to go camping a bunch in So. Cal., but have no idea of the *good* places to go in San Jose/San Francisco and surrounding areas...
Suggestions?
And if they are good for going on easy hikes, even better!
