Hey there, I often attend outdoor festivals during the summer. I like to bring my own food, but at times I am at a loss of what to bring. Or I just get bored of what I bring. I don't have a stove to cook anything.
Usually I bring fruit, peanut butter, crackers, granola bars, cereal, soy milk, apple sauce, nuts, muffins, etc.
What else is good to take that is nummy?
Thanks!
^_^

Re: best foods to take camping?
Wed, July 6, 2005 - 6:57 AMi also go to a lot of festivals and after my first three really just decided it is best to get a grill or coleman stove. I use a hibachi and always bring chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, in the morning you can throw a frying pan on the grill and make eggs and such. my advice is get a grill.

Re: best foods to take camping?
Wed, July 6, 2005 - 1:21 PMIf you eat meat, the number one best camping food ever (in my opinion) is home made beef jerky. I personally find it hits the spot, especially if you are in the middle of hiking or, say, dancing past dawn.
Its better than store bought jerky because it is way cheaper and healthier to make your own. It doesn't have to be beef either, any meat will do. Basically you just partially freeze whatever you choose to make jerky with (this is the only important step, it makes cutting the meat much easier), marinate it in whatever you want (classic ingredients: soy sauce, garlic, vinegar, brown sugar, cayenne, mustard, liquid smoke, etc), and then lay on racks in the oven to dehydrate at a low temp (warm-100s) for 6-12 hours. I usually do it overnight, with the door cracked open to prevent the meat from "cooking." I like to make large batches and split them up into different flavors. I hope this was helpful to someone! -

Re: best foods to take camping?
Fri, July 8, 2005 - 5:14 PMOK. I'll let you in on my recipe - 'Mounds Trail Mix'. I've used it many times on backpacking and camping trips. It is ridiculously easy to make:
1 cup oats
3/4 cup choc. chips
3/4 cup shredded coconut
Put inged. in a ziplock bag and place in the microwave oven for 60 seconds. Take the bag out after 30 seconds and shake it (this will make chocolate nuggets). Put back in the microwave for the remaining 30 seconds. Remove the bag and put it in the fridge to harden up.
If you would prefere an 'Almond Joy Mix' just add toasted almond slivers. Makes a great snack and doesn't cost much. Enjoy! -

Re: best foods to take camping?
Mon, July 11, 2005 - 9:33 AMIf you don't want to go the whole "big stove" route, you could get one burner that screws into the top of a fuel canister. Then you can heat a pot of water..
I like the Tasty Bite meals from Trader Joes...very easy. -

Mon, July 11, 2005 - 11:36 AMTough audience..;o) It's just that even one burner opens up a whole world..
OK...Salmon or tuna foil packet..( I found some at the 99) add a little pack of mayo...(like from take-out) chop some celery, nuts maybe some fruit...eat it from the packet or on bread..
Dried wasabi peas...
pitted dates....
deviled eggs...
some delish banana bread that you baked at home...

Re: best foods to take camping?
Tue, July 12, 2005 - 12:55 PMSo i know this may not sound like the rockin-est healthiest choice, but i must make a shameless plug for a dehydrated camping food brand i have found to be awesome. my husband and I used to try to cook on every camping trip, we are way into organic and healthy meals, but found we were spending so much time cooking, it interfered with relaxing.
so, we went on a major taste test spree of the dehyrated food section at REI and found Mountain House to be so many million times better thank all the others. The chicken stew rocks. We did some research and foudn that this is a product of oregon free drty which has some very good techniques for how they dehyrate their food. theflavors are great and on meal packet is awesomely filling after a day of hiking/playing/etc.
HIghly recommended for ease.

Re: best foods to take camping?
Sun, July 24, 2005 - 12:47 PMmake some breakfast burrito and some been and cheese prior to your trip wrap in foil and freeze. They will stay nice and cool in your cooler. dont forget to use ziplock so they dont get wet. That saved our spaceisland camp last year. To warm them up put them on the hood of a car or on the dash. it just takes a couple of minutes.

Re: best foods to take camping?
Fri, July 29, 2005 - 5:49 PMI have used the soup mixes that you only need to add water to also and it is awsome. I dont know if anyone has said that yet but it is great.
Also I found this buisquick just add water and shake and pour blueberry pancake mix whichis awsome for camping/festivals. One of my friends and I used grape juice instead of water and damn it was soo goood. Damn. -

Re: best foods to take camping?
Fri, July 29, 2005 - 7:38 PMOk first a disclaimer - Unless you are hardcore and broke($$) dont do this.
When I was in the Marines we would go out for a few weeks at a time and those MREs started to taste good after a while, but if you want cheap... go to Taco Bell and get a bunch of soft tacos, put them in a plastic bag and stuff them in the bottom of your pack (its easy-they squish). then take them out and snack on them. yeah nasty, but we were younger and it beats eating the egg or ham slice MRE!

Re: best foods to take camping?
Sat, July 30, 2005 - 6:32 AMThese are both good and store for a long time while also not being prone to attracting bears.
They are also easy to add locally available ingredients too.
Try adding corn or fresh berries like blackberries to the instant bisquick.
-
Re: best foods to take camping?
Sat, April 7, 2007 - 4:19 PMBy the way, you only need one of the bisquick containers for shaking the water and mix in. You can refill it from the small packages of instant mixes, even the ones from other companies. Just check the mixing instructions, if they are the same you are all set and the small pouches cost a lot less and you don't have to haul another plastic item.

Re: best foods to take camping?
Tue, August 30, 2005 - 7:07 AMI will sometimes buy cans of tuna or chicken. They taste good cold and are high in protien. I can't eat a lot high carbs and have to go high protein, so it works for me.

Re: best foods to take camping?
Sun, April 8, 2007 - 1:07 PMOkay, dinner at Walters camp!
I'll bring Bison and Venison and homegrown organics.
One of my best camping dinners (at a reenactor gathering) was roasted spuds, corn and a case of lobsters all roasted on the same fire and all but the lobsters grown in my own fields.
Washed down with home brewed organic meade.
The clan ate ridiculously well that night! -

Re: best foods to take camping?
Mon, April 9, 2007 - 10:04 AMYou just proved you (or whoever the perp was) don't know how to cook Bison.
It may also not have been butchered properly.
Being lower in fat you have to cook it at a much lower temperature.
Believe me you have not had good bison if you can say that.
Most people that love beef really love Bison when they get decently prepared bison.

Re: best foods to take camping?
Mon, April 9, 2007 - 4:32 PMI like to make tabouli ahead. It travels well (no mayo or dairy) and is light but healthy. Scoop some into a 1/2 pita and you've got a nice lunch. -
