quiet air pump?

Does anyone know of a 12 Volt air pump that does not make the horribly unnatural noise that mine does?

I would really appreciate knowing where to buy one.

Can you describe the noise for comparison? Ours is a Coleman that runs on 4 D cell batteries. I don't think it's to noisy. They have to make a little noise because of the fan that draws the air.

I have yet to see any electrical air pump that is very quiet.

I would recommend one of the foot pumps that look like a small accordion. They are quiet and you are not at the whims of electricity.

They work fine even for larger air mattresses.

It is still a lot easier than doing it by mouth while not ruining the setting with electrical noises.

My foot pump is much louder than my electrical pump. Wheezes like an old man.

Some of them do, but that's a more natural sound anyway. :-)

Also the double action pumps go about twice as fast, though I have only seen that in hand operated pumps, as is to be expected.

My electric pump inflates my mattress in 2-3 minutes, keeping the overall inflation time to a minimum.

I'm sure it does, but is a few minutes time that big a deal when camping? Isn't part of the idea to get away from the artificial concepts of so called civilization, including such issues as "wasting time" and always having to hurry? Part of the idea is to get away from the quick and easy convenience store mentality.

This is also why it massively cracks me up to see people at medieval or buckskinner events that bring along one of those, the irony and glaring logical inconsistency is ludicrous.

Few of us cannot stand a small bit of extra exercise, and we can all benefit from less energy waste and needless consumption of resources so I'm still much more in favor of a foot operated bellows pump, and they weigh less too, making packing and unpacking easier and saving fuel in the vehicle you use to get there as well.

The main request of the opening post was for the most quiet pump. My assumption is that this so as not to disturb fellow campers, especially in the evening. The electric is in my opinion the quietest and the fast and the least disturbing to the natural setting. If the camper was really roughing it , they wouldn't be using an oversize air mattress at all and just be using a self inflating pad (and there are some very comfortable pads). In my personal case, I have bad back that makes me miserable and keeps me awake all night unless I have very comfortable bed. Each day I camp, I become more exhausted and have less fun. I have gone so far as to haul out a single wide mattress in the back of my truck. I car camp by night and do day hikes to surrounding beaches and parks. Blowing up an air mattress is not the highlight of my trip, it is getting out to the trails and streams.

Well Chris, with that in mind I can certainly see where you are coming from.

Injuries and sleep problems do override a lot of other considerations.

I used to suffer a lot from sciatic damage I got from a bad fall I took while doing a dog rescue. I tried just about everything and eventually found and researched a chinese remedy called Kombucha which did wonders for helping me heal while reducing the pain and letting me sleep much more. You might try it. There is a tribe about it on here and it is cheap and natural and once you get a colony of it going you can make your own very cheaply.

It is also quite tasty in iced tea and lemonade and in a number of food recipes. Check it out, it might help you some and there is little to lose.
