Is it o.k. to camp out on beaches in California maybe up away from the water a ways. Know of any places like that?

  • Ooh, I'd like to know this too.
    I love camping on beaches.
    • Unsu...

Interesting topic. Please, somone must know the answer.
      • I'm headed to Point Reyes tomorrow for the weekend.... I'm staying at the Coast camp site which are about a 2 mile hike in and 200 yards from the water. I assume there are other places where you can camp right on the sand...
        • there is a place on 101 in humboldt county orick you can camp right on the beach and last time i checked it was free but the fog rolls in most days I've been and it is windy as hell but i believe it is free too a lot of rv people there and some tent folk too
  • Some campsites in Big Sur are right on the water, but not really "beachy" - more cliffy. You have to reserve them way ahead of time through the State Park Service.
    • Thanks everyone for the posts!

I'll check into them, again I appreciate a place to start!
      • For those who live anywhere near the dunes of Lake Michigan, we have the best beaches for camping and appreciating the natural
woodlands, especially since so many folks moved to the warm weather states.
        • It's hard to find good beach camping here in the states. In Mexico though, there is some really great camping where you can have miles of beach almost completely to yourself. Our favorite was Kino Bay near Tiburon Island. you gotta go during the winter or you'll catch on fire (it's that $#@$#% hot!) The waves are not big because of the gulf influence, but fishing is awesome (lotta trigger) and bait is cheap (they shrimp in the gulf.)

Here in the states, you just can;t find a secluded beach to save your life. We flock to, and congregate on nearly every single inch of coastline. People in 3rd world countries don;t have the luxary of lounging about on a beach like we do. My only concern with camping in Mexico is that you can;t take firearms, and shit can happen. On the plus side, tourists are generally left alone since it is a measurable portion of their economy.
  • When I was a teenager, we used to camp on any of the secluded beaches north of Santa Cruz along Hwy 1. You might want to check with the local officials first though. Pretty much a short hike in.
    • I went to Mattole a few months ago. It was 8 bucks a night and not bad. Usal Beach you can camp right on the beach and it is like 9 bucks a night. If anyone is interested you can shoot me a message and I will link you to one of my blogs.
