Beach camping/tenting?

Is it o.k. to camp out on beaches in Southern California maybe up away from the water a ways. Know of any places like that?

    There is very little (I can't think of any) legal beach camping in California. The state is just to populous. There are any number of campgrounds near the beach. Try Oregon.

    Camping can be a bit of a debatable term. If you fell asleep next to the fire, you just over indulged. If you put up a tent you get a ticket and must move.
