Re: Crater Lake and Mt St Helens
Wed, July 11, 2007 - 9:32 PMI camped for two nights near Crater Lake last September. Drove there without any definite plans and found out that there are tons of little camp grounds within the surrounding area. Most of the campgrounds were within the surrounding state and local parks. We ended up stopping in a little town called Prospect, where we got a recommendation from a woman in a small travel info office. She suggested a small campground north of the town called Mill Creek. It was a beautiful spot in the trees next to a small creek. Small campground with less than ten spots, quiet, simple with only an out house, no electrical hook ups and it was cheap. I think we spent something like three dollars a night, which we placed in a drop box. We only had a couple of neighbors which may have been because we stayed during the week, but it felt pretty private even with others around. We snagged a spot next to the creek and the sound of the burbling water was great to fall asleep to. This little campground was located off of 62 between Union Creek and Prospect. I remember driving by lots of other campgrounds in the area as well. It also wasn't all that far away from the lake itself, maybe twenty miles.
I hope this helps. -

Re: Crater Lake and Mt St Helens
Wed, July 25, 2007 - 4:06 PMWe stayed at Lake of the Woods, it is about 40 minutes to an hour from Crater Lake, but a drive more than worth it. They have camping and cabins for all campers.

Re: Crater Lake and Mt St Helens
Wed, July 25, 2007 - 11:13 PMthanks for teh advise guys our trip north was the trip from hell starting with a car accident followed by rain and news of a death in the family .... and yes I am afraid to ask if anything else can go wrong. We found one of the camp grounds on the edge of the park. It was desolate but it was mid week also. A nice change compared to our last NP visits which were overcrowded with traffic jams. So this was refreshing.
