Road maps with campsite data

topic posted Sat, May 12, 2007 - 12:53 AM by  Max
Who publishes the best paper (not electronic) maps that show campgrounds along the route with some basic info: fees, toilets, showers, reservations, etc. I'm taking a week off and will be in Oregon, California and Nevada. I read (maybe it was here) that the AAA has good campground maps. I don't own a car, so don't really have much use for membership. When I need a car, I have access to a motorpool or for a trip such as this, I rent.

Ditto that, we have a few AAA maps that cover the Sierras/Tahoe area, and they have numbered markers that refer to charts on the back which include details for campsites, ski spots, snowshoeing trails, etc. I am sure they make the same for Oregon and Nevada.

I got a donation solicitation from the National Parks Service, and they sent me a map of campsites in my state (California) that was surprisingly useful. I don't know how you'd go about getting one without being part of that mailing, but maybe they sell them?

Is there any maps or listings like this that cover the entire u.s.? I get the koa directory but problem is it only shows koa listings of course. Theres not ALWAYS a KOA or a good one for that matter.

there is this one book i had wrights guide to free campgrounds and I almost hate mentioning it for the following reasons. I bought the original edition for 12 and change some of the campsites were like finding a riddle. with piss poor directions. but there were some sweet spots too. I went to get a new edition and the effers split it east and west and also in 94 army corp of engineers who had some cool spots for free went to fees. So not only did they split the country in half to sell more books they included low cost under $12 if they did not add the fee sites the book would have been pretty damn small. And i thought with the internet and advancement in computers the editing and layout would have improved but I was sadly disappointed. Appears some of the directions are pretty vague.

the book had national forest , blm and army corp which are generally more primitive than your KOA's. I personally think KOA's are too damn expensive some of them are like 30-40 night that is just straight crazy.

I agree about KOA's I get teh directory because I have the koa card because I have about 4 or 5 I like. For the most part I love state park campgrounds. This is why I need a big guide. ;)

OK, it seems I'll do best if I find someone with membership in AAA. This is more a road trip than a real camping trip, where I might spend a few hours hiking in someplace to get away from the instant ghettos people create with their campers and ten thousand watt lamps and televisions and stuff. A primitive site that is not too far from the road is fine with me. I'd prefer to stay in a hostel over most KOA's.
