The night get down into the 30s and have been known to go into the 20s. I have considered these options.

1. Take a sleeping bag and a helluva lot of quilts. (I'm taking my truck. Space is not a problem.)

2. Try and rent a 0 degree bag.

3. Invest in a Zodi Tent heater. http://www.zodi.com/hotvents.html (I might use this again for a few weekends in September/October)

4. Blow the money on a decent hotel room.

There is this nearly secret oasis in the desert that used to be my backyard. I grew up in this beautiful wash where the water flows year round and the cottonwoods grow tall. Since then the area has become a neture preserve, but I still take the kids camping there.

Whenever we go I always take a few industrial sized garbage bags to pack out the trash left by the motorcyclists and 4 wheelers (fucking shitheels) The last time I was out there my friend and I were astounded to find hundreds of discarded backpacks, little day packs liek your kid would wear for school. The illegals dump 'em there before moving north.

So we filled the garbage bags with as much as we could pack out, then set to burning the rest. I guess the burning nylon made some black smoke and alerted the Sheriff and 2 deputies showed up thinking there was a brush fire. When they found out what we were doing, and saw how we erased our campsite footprint, we got off without a ticket.

My point, in a roundabout way, is that illegal aliens need to stop dumping their fucking trash in the desert. I'm tired of empty milk jugs, back packs, nasty ass underwear with skidmarks, old clothes, and such. Welcome to America, now learn English and pick up your fucking trash! It's no better out at my parent's ranch along the border. Maybe these border rescue groups should put garbage cans next to their water stations.

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.
It's a days hard hike to get up the mountain (9000' vertical ascent at 45 degrees most of the way). This is back country. You lose it there, they won't find you for years.

But with the feds taking care of it we now have:
1) fees!! Fucking $6 a night
2) Reservations-you have to reserve a campsite, no offsite camping allowed
3) camp sites now include a cement table, grill, and bear-proof boxes. What's next? A circle K?
4) No firearms permitted. So they got cat, bears, but no guns.

Something tells me they are gathering fees to help put a road on the mountain so the candy asses who are ruining the other mountains can get their lazy fat asses up there too. I don;t know why the forest service feels they need to do all this stuff. The rugged climb was enough to keep out the tenderfeet.

thought I would share a bit of knowledge about how you lose heat aka get cold.
The five ways the body loses heat are
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
Respiration
Perspiration/Moisture

Conduction is the physical process where heat is lost because you are touching something cold. So don't sit or lay on the bare ground, a large stone or a snow covered log. Put some insulation between you and it. be sure there is good insulation between your sleeping bag and the ground. If you're hunting in Winter bring a 3X3 hunk of carpet with pad stapled together to stand on if your standing on the ground. Put some kind of pad on the tree you're leaning on in the treestand or on the ground.
Convection is the heat lost from the wind blowing over/around you. So putting it simply, stay out of the wind. Use self made and natural occuring windbreaks. Put your camp in the wind shadow of same as well as your stands. Wear a windproof layer if possible.
Radiation is heat lost just because your standing it the great wide open. Even though you are clothed well with a hat, a scarf, gloves, etc. The heat still radiates off you. It also radiates out of your tent. Having some kind of roof above you will help reduce heat loss from radiation. That is also another reason to put a tarp over your tent not just to keep the snow off your tent but to be a radiation inhibitor/reflector. I've never personally tried it but those treestand umbrella roofs might help in this regard.
These first three are why it is urgent to get yourself a shelter in a survival situation. A proper shelter will get you off direct contact with the ground, block the wind and cover you to hold in radiant heat.
Respiration is your own breath. You take in cold air and exhale warm, moist air. The faster you breath the faster you'll get cold. Control your breathing. Easy does it in activities in cold weather. I've never had one to try but one of those fairly new heat exchanger face covers might be a good investment for the Deep cold Season. Slow, steady work is much better than rushing, grunting and heaving in gulps of cold air. This also brings us to the last...
Perspiration or sweating...to put it simply, sweating can kill you. While exercise can heat up your muscles and warm you all over, you must not sweat. You should be dressed in layers against the cold, so if you're working, strip layers. If you sweat strip and dry yourself with a towel if available. Not just sweat but any mositure is lethal in the deep cold. Rain, slushy snow or falling into water are all potentional killers. You need to get out of wet weather or the water, and get yourself and your clothes dry just as fast as you safely can. You have longer than you think before serious hypothermia starts. As long as you can, and are shivering you're in the self save-able zone. If you stop shivering and get foggy in thought you better have a friend with you or immediate rescue. A word here on wool. Yes it can keep you warm when damp but it sucks up a lot of water if you fall in . The same is true for most synthetic insulation.
Try swimming in any of it. You'll find it is the most exhausting activity you've ever tried. Extreme care must be taken when walking on ice.
So remember whenever and whereever possible don't sit, stand or lay on bare ground or object. Try to stay out of the wind. Keep under cover. Control your breathing. Stay dry, stay warm, stay alive.

Went out Thursday to the Hoosier National Forest. I took a small pack and what I had in my pockets.
My gear list
1 1qt cooking pot
a few utensils
A canteen cup (stainless steel)
1 camp knife(general purpose knife of my own design)
1 10" mill file
1 diamond hone
1 pocket chain saw
1 Marble's camp axe
Cold Steel Spetznas shovel.
1 compass
10 X 50 binoculars
1 10X10 tarpoline
1 air mattress
thin fleece blanket
1 2 L canteen of water
3 bandanas
flint and steel fire starting kit
100 feet of paracord
1 roll of Gorilla tape
My pocket survival kit
Small note pad and three pens
BugOFF all natural insect repellent
the boots and clothes I was wearing
WARNING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE POLITICALLY INCORRECT. I also took my longbow, five broadhead tipped and two small game head tipped arrows, shooting glove and license as it is archery deer season here in Indiana.
I did take some food, enough for the first day and a half. Some pre-beaten eggs in a naglene bottle, some pico de gallo in a zip bag to go with the eggs. 4 Kashi granola bars of different types. small bag of jerky. an onion, a head of garlic. sea salt and pepper blend cranks. one can of corn beef hash (because it's been in the larder for a year) one can of beans and a small bag of rice. 1 pound of ground coffee. and various and sunder tea bags that I always seem to have in my pockets and spare room places in my packs etc.

I get ther before first light I look at my map and I know I can head due East for over 75 miles.I figure 10 is farther than most folks go so I open my glove box and get one last bit of gear pacce counter beads. After pacing off 100 meters, for example 65 paces with your left foot, pull down the first bead from the line with nine. Continue this until all nine beads are down. After the next 100 meters pull down a bead from the line with four and reset the nine beads. This marks 1 kilometer. When all the beads are pulled down at 4900 meters pace off another 100 meters, pull all the beads up to mark 5 kilometers, and start again. With practice you can be sure of your pace count day or night.
Sort of like saying the rosary while you walk. Which is where no doubt the idea for the beads came from.
So dead reckoning 10 clicks in.
I was right, after the first click the detris of human contact began to thin out. After 2 I hardly saw any and just beyond that none at all. So I went just half a click more. It was full on day by then so I circled an interesting looking clearing and found not one trace any human had been here before. The turkey and racoon and possum sign where incredible. 200 yrads to my northeast was an oak ridge and that would be where I would try to ambush a wary whitetail. So I went to the north side of the clearing where there was a huge boulder sticking out of the ground. and a made a A-frame with the trap with the boulder to the rear and my fire pit and entrance to due south. I blew up my air mattress and set up my bed. I gathered rocks for my fire ring and then tinder, kindling and fuel for my fire. I then built my fire and made myself some scrambled eggs with pico de gallo and some cowboy coffee.
Then I went into the middle of the clearing and took three bearings so I could find this place again. I could see a fire watch tower due north, High Tension powerlines due south One that was about 10 dgrees west of due south had a pecular red ball on the wires right next to it Due West from the direction I had come I marked a lightening struck giant sycamore I had used as my last dead reckoning landmark. Then I went looking for a water source. I found a small creek just over the hill. It was 11:50 am and as I crested the hill I saw several deer drinking from the stream. I sat down and waited for them to drink their fill.
They moved off toward the south and that is when I saw in the distance the corn fields, at least 2 miles away. Through the trees I doubt anyone not raided in corn country would have known what the little visible patch of golden brown that far away was. I went back to camp and made a water filtration tripod with my three banadas. I dranks the last liter of water in my canteen and went to the stream to fill it. the stream was slow moving and down from where I could see it normally was(did I mention it was 95? and has been for months seemingly) anyway it waqsn't muddy upstream from where the deer had been drinking and I filled my canteen halfway and took it back to camp and filtered it and then built up my fire and boiled it. while it was still real close to boiling I poured it into my canteen in order to kill anything that might still have been in there from the creek.
I decided to take a nap and then circle up into the oak ridge in the early afternoon and then over to the corn field edge and back to camp before dark. Bow in hand I slowly walked the route I set for myself. I made note of all the sign I saw and where and marked on the map places I thought it might be worth standing at dawn and dusk.
Aside from all the beauty I witnessed and the abundant game sign I saw the acorns corp appears low this year. So most of the deer sign was between the creek and the corn. Well it was about 6:30 when I turned toward camp. When it's the first time you've been somewhere it's better to only travel in the daylight. I got back to camp about 15 minutes before first light. Just before I got to camp I had the occassion to draw and release an arrow. As I am not sure of the sensiblities of my readers I will spare you the details. I'll just say when I got back to camp i had roaste squirrel and rice for supper and a cup of green tea. I watched my fire, prayed and communed with God for an hour or two and crawled into bed. I slept like a child in the bossum of its mother. I woke up about an hour before daybreak, stoked up the fire, Thanked God for the New Day and made cowboy coffee and a sort of fried rice and squirrel dish for breakers with what had been left over from supper. Yes they didn't get refridgerated but I put them in zip bags and recooking them I am sure made them safe to eat. I filtered a full canteen of water but instead of boiling after filtration I added an iodine tablet I had and then two little concentrate bottles of sassafrass tea I remembered I had in my pack. The sassafrass would kill the iodine taste and if I drank it enough I'd exude a natural insect repellant through my skin. Anyway I scouted and hunted all day. It was way too hit to take it really seriously. I didn't loose another feather shaft all day. I went back to camp made up some baked beans with a bit of jerky in them and sat quietly eating and thinking how grand this almost this two days had been. I decided to come home first thing in the morningI completely erased my camp foot print but I stacked my fire ring rocks up at the rear side of the boulder under some shrubbery that grew there. For when I return to this little enchanted glen. The walk back to the car was uneventful as was the 2 hour drive home.
Now some tips from the humourous side of life.
Remember to skin test a leaf on your arm before using it for more delicate business after your morning latreen.
Cowboy coffee is not "good to the last drop" Leave the dregs in the cup.
If you're on a really steep hill and you notice your boot needs tying, wait until you've found a level ledge or shelf before you tie it. Your somersaulting and cartwheeling down the heel isn't nearly as funny with no one to see, point and laugh.

when I break camp I put the topsoil back, then scatter rocks over the area, then sticks and logs. Fireplace is utterly soaked and the rocks scattered randomly (with a good coat of dirt over the soaked coals.) Whenever possible I will throw brush and bushes over the area as well. Ideally the camp site should utterly vanish within a month.

If we searched the area we found the water popping up some distance away from one of these holes. We were trying tofigure out how these subterranian water lines were formed when we realized that during the drought the local fuzzies had dug their tunnels closer and closer to the spring in search of water. When the monsoon season came along, their holes were flooded, creating these water pipelines that diverted flow in all directions. Cool.

We found information on Potwisha and Buckeye Flats campgrounds and they sound like they're smaller than the big RV camps. Does anybody have any recommendations or suggestions?

well, obviously which you would call it usually depends on wether or not you are the victim.....

My funniest one is when a large (60x40) metalicized tarp was put up between trees for sun shade, at a steep slope so it would not get weight down from any rain that might happen.

Under it we had tents, dome tents...

Well late one night it got real windy and ripped loose some of the grommets and the edge reinforcing cord along the top edge, then it rained in torrents.

Everything seemed fine though and we pretty much all slept through it not knowing about the damage to the tarp.

Some time in the early morning I woke up unable to breath and realized the tent roof was within inches of my face and the air was very stale.

I tried to life the roof but could not, but the way it moved suggested water, and a lot of it on top of the tent.

So, thinking my life depended on it, and it probably did, I grabbed a large dagger and cut my way out, which lead to a nice deluge into the tent and freezing cold water all over me.

During the night the tarp had shifted, filled with water, bent over the trees it was tied to, and proceeded to crush my tent.

Oh, and on top of all that Northern Hydraulic refused to honor the warranty on the $200 tarp, which was hurricane rated. Last time I bought anything from them.

2) what about bears? (i'm in california). i hear that bears can rip open cracked open windows looking for food. do i need to keep my food out of the car, away from it? am i just being paranoid? i know there are bear boxes in places like yosemite, but what about smaller campgrounds around the state?

i know i could just sleep in a tent, on the ground, but i want to go camping alone and i'm not very experienced (yet - unless you count camping at loud sound system gatherings camping), so i know i'd just feel safer in the car for now. plus i recall nights of trying to sleep in a tent and freaking out at every little noise and having trouble getting to sleep. i figure i should ease myself into this.

I did this on a recent minimalist backpacking trip into the hoosier National forest and thought I'd share it. I took eggs in a nygel bottle in my pack. I prebroke the eggs, added 1 tablespoon of water per egg and whisked them up for scrambles or omelettes then pours them in the wide mouth nygel abd left an inch and a half for expansion and froze them solid over night. After hiking in 5 miles and setting up camp they were still frozen but by morning in the tent they had thawed enough to use and I sure got smiles from the other guys scrambling up fresh eggs in the morning. I also had a wide mouth nygel full of pico de gallo to go with the eggs and they razed about that. I kept then both in the same pair of spare wool socks inside a zip lock bag. The frozen eggs kept the pico cold and fresh, It wasn't enough extra weight to be a problem and provided high quality nutrition on that first morning in camp.
My other tip is if you want something sweet that is a notch above and never spoils, EVER. try buckwheat honey. It is fantastic on pancakes (when you forget the real maple syrup like I did once) and it has enough flavor to stand up to nut butters in simple sandwiches. Remember the only food that never spoils is honey. and sometimes some quality sugar can give you that boost you need for that last few miles beofre camp or home. You might also like guava honey.
a quick recipe.......if you have a food processor or really good blender grind roasted cashews(1 pound) and dribble in walnut oil until it is a smooth paste(just a couple to few teaspoons of walnut oil) and you have a nut(legume actually) butter that is leaps and bounds beyond peanut(another legume) butter.

Hi folks, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a nasty, tiny invasive snail from New Zealand has shown up in southern California. This very tiny (a few millimeters long) snail can clone itself, and one snail can produce a population of millions that carpet the bottom of a stream, crowding out native invertebrates and thus reducing food resources for native fish. It had been found in the Malibu Creek watershed, in Piru Creek, and very recently in the upper San Gabriel.

The snails can attach to clothing, boots, other gear, even skin, and hitchhike to new areas. The can live up to a month out of water in moist conditions.

It may have been brought here by fishermen, hikers, or researchers.

What can you do? If possible, stay out of infected creeks!

Once you have been through any creek, examine your clothes and boots and try to remove snails. (This is very difficult, their small size makes them hard to see, and they can get into boot soles and hide under laces).

To avoid carrying them from an infected watershed to a clean one, only hike in one watershed a day!

Let clothes and boots dry THOROUGHLY, in a clothes dryer or in the sun for at least 48 hours, before wearing them in a new watershed.

You will be saving them money on electricity, plus cutting fuel usage overall.

Before the kids only had room in their packs for a sleeping bag and some small essentials. Now they have room to spare and a more comfortable frame to carry it in.

DEEP CREEK HOT SPRINGS CAMPING

Deep Creek Hot Springs is a beautiful hotspring located in the San Bernadino National Forest on the East fork of the Mojave River. It's a wonderful place to soak in the warm/hot tubs, or swim in the cold river, or both.

The hike to the springs is short but can be a challenge for some beginners. You will want to bring plenty of water and a lunch or snack. Please pack out what you bring in: leave no trace.

This is a clothing optional area, and you will encounter nude bathers so if you're not comfortable with that you may not want to attend. You do not need to be nude yourself, but please be polite to those who choose to bath nude. Everyone I have encountered at the hotsprings has been very polite.

On a typical weekend during the summer, you'll encounter both nude and clothed bathers of all age groups, from senior citizens to very young children, and everything in between.

I'll be camping at Bown Ranch on Friday night. I plan on having a BBQ, camp fire, and good conversation. I plan to arrive right before sunset. Saturday morning around 8 am we'll all hike down to the springs and enjoy a wonderful day of soaking in the sun and mineral water, and enjoying each other's company.

You are welcome to show up friday night and camp, or saturday morning and hike down with us, or even join us later in the day. I'll be there until sunset Saturday evening.

Please let me know if you are joining us so I'll know to expect you.

By myself, I love the more rugged sites and have less experience with this kind of thing, but with this crew we want to be gentle and accomodating for all levels of outdoorsy-ness. So, any suggestions you have are most appreciated!!!!

I recently found myself camping at Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. It was a mildly windy day, and I decided to stick some stakes in the ground and fortify my tent a little with some rope.

I discovered that I knew the name of the knot that I wanted to use, Taut Line Hitch, but I couldn't remember how to make one. Luckily there was an Eagle Scout in the group and he reminded me.

I can only remember four knots from Boy Scouts. Taut Line Hitch, Clove Hitch, Square Knot, and Two Half Hitches.

I could have studied some knots before I left, but I have to admit I wouldn't have known which ones to brush up on.

So which knots, say five-six, are the most commonly used knots in camping and/or life in general?

Urgh.
